The Rising Voice of Antoinette Clarke

Antoinette Clarke grew up learning responsibility at a young age. As the eldest daughter in her home, she became a source of support for her mother, Felicia, and her three younger sisters. The family lived with their grandfather, Eggy, who cared for his daughter and grandchildren and did his best to guide them through difficult circumstances.

Antoinette’s mother lived with multiple sclerosis, and from a young age, Antoinette understood that she had an important role to play at home. After school, she helped prepare dinner, assisted with her mother’s medical needs, and cared for her younger sisters. She grew up quickly, balancing the responsibilities of being a daughter and sister with the demands of being a student.

Even with so much responsibility at home, Antoinette remained deeply committed to her education. She studied hard, maintained good grades, and consistently received positive reports from her teachers. Her dedication earned her acceptance to a prestigious boarding school, which offered the flexibility she needed to continue supporting her family. There, she continued to excel academically while also joining the marching band.

In 2021, Antoinette experienced a profound loss when her mother passed away during her first year of high school. With the support of her family and community, Antoinette continued moving forward. Manijeh had been a caring presence in the family’s life since 1992, supporting Felicia and Eggy even before Antoinette was born. After Felicia’s passing, Manijeh continued that commitment to the family, supporting Antoinette and helping to fund her education.

That continued support has helped Antoinette remain focused on her future. She graduated from high school this year and is preparing to begin her next chapter. She has chosen Montego Bay Community College as the starting point for her journey toward an associate degree in Business Administration and is currently completing the final requirements for her acceptance.

Since 2024, Antoinette has also been an active member of the Trelawny All Star Marching Band, a community organization that brings young people together through music. Originally created to engage children experiencing behavioral challenges, the band has grown to welcome a wider range of young people in the community. Antoinette serves as the band’s Public Relations Officer and choreographer for the cheer line, dedicating her time to something she genuinely enjoys. 

Perhaps one of the most meaningful parts of Antoinette’s journey is the example she sets for others. Her younger sisters look up to her as a role model, as do other young people and friends in her community. Despite the challenges she has faced, Antoinette has continued to pursue her education, give back to her community, and work toward building a different future.

Her story is one of perseverance, responsibility, and hope. The support she has received has helped her continue working toward her goals, but she has also shown tremendous determination of her own—turning difficult experiences into motivation to create something better for herself and those around her.
